Technology readiness level (TRL) is a method of estimating the maturity of technologies during the acquisition phase of a program. It is an effective tool for technology innovation direction, product development and R&D.
Purpose & Use
The primary purpose of using technology readiness levels is to help an organization in making decisions concerning the development and transitioning of technology. This is one of the critical tools required to check the progress of research and development activities within an organization.
Process & Reporting
Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is evaluated through a Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) which examines the program concepts, technology requirements, and demonstrated technology capabilities. TRL is based on a scale ranging from 1 to 9 and 9 being the most mature technology. It enables consistent and uniform discussions of technical maturity across different types of technologies. The search is conducted using a well-tested search string on the commercial and open-source databases to extract the relevant records.
